Will the Buffalo Bills lose Jerry Hughes?
Carucci says that Rex Ryan wants to retain Hughes but it he is not going to come cheap. If the Bills go the route of using their franchise tag it will cost $13.1 million or more. Carucci believes the cost for the Bills to retain Hughes under contract will be $8 million per season with a guarantee of $20 million.
The key question, and the one that Carucci poses well is figuring out his exact role.
Ryan uses a wide variety of fronts, so Hughes would likely end up being more of an outside linebacker and, consequently, wouldn’t figure to be on the field as much as he was in Schwartz’s defense. Do the Bills want to pay for a pure pass-rusher when they have so much money already invested in Mario Williams and the rest of the front? It also will be interesting to see how Mario adjusts to moving back to outside linebacker, which he played when former Bills defensive coordinator Mike Pettine ran Ryan’s scheme in 2013. Mario had 13 sacks that year. The Bills don’t figure to need to do a whole lot with the defensive line in free agency or the draft.
