Was the Sammy Watkins trade worth it?
Hindsight is always 20-20. But as Bills fans stare at the draft board Thursday and Friday night and wait until the 50th pick, you have to wonder if Watkins will ultimately prove to be worth the bounty the Bills gave to the Browns.
The Buffalo News has a good piece debating the fact–most of it hinges on whether the Bills should have sat and took Odell Beckham like many draft prognosticators predicted and came into the 2015 draft with the ability to pickup a top offensive lineman.
ESPN’s KC Joyner believes Watkins was elite and a rare talent who didn’t compare as well to Beckham because of the quarterback situation. Which is a fair assessment.
Jon Gruden agreed: “I really like what they did last year trading up to get that receiver, because Watkins is one heck of a player,” Gruden said last week on a conference call, without being prompted.
James Lofton might have summed it up best, “there’s no telling what kind of season Odell Beckham would have had in Buffalo with the same quarterback situation that Sammy Watkins had,” Lofton said. “You’ve got a great player there. Enjoy him.”
