Rumor Mill: Could Cassel be out and Taylor leaping ahead?
Most Buffalo Bills fans are aware that the Bills’ brought in two new quarterbacks this offseason. The Bills traded for Matt Cassel and signed Tyrod Taylor. It appeared, at least initially, that Cassel would have the lead role and Taylor might have a chance to compete leaving Manuel on the outside. However, it was Rex Ryan who championed the signing of Taylor and has been a fan of his for some time.
With head coach Rex Ryan showing more enthusiasm for Taylor than for Cassel, it’ll be interesting to see how quickly the change comes in training camp. The fact is, the Bills cannot split the reps throughout all of training camp amongst three quarterbacks. The team will need synergy for the starting quarterback, wide receivers, tight ends, etc. But there is no doubt that Ryan loves the intangibles that Taylor brings to his game, one of the biggest being his speed. Taylor could argue that he is the fastest quarterback in the NFL and that could be a game changer.
Interesting stat: Among all active quarterbacks, only one quarterback in the league has run a faster 40-yard dash at the Combine than Taylor’s 4.51 was Robert Griffin III. Griffin isn’t the same as he was back then so Taylor might still be the fastest.
Does that matter? Taylor has never been a starting quarterback and his backup duties has produced no touchdowns and two interceptions. EJ Manuel might not run as fast but he has proven to be a viable passer and good running out of the pocket.
Who would be your choice of starting week one?
